The CNU Neuroscience Program aims to provide a comprehensive undergraduate neuroscience education to all students, combining advanced coursework with hands-on research experience.
The Neuroscience Program at Christopher Newport University is a student-focused, undergraduate program that offers a comprehensive curriculum in neuroscience, providing a thorough understanding of neuroscience fundamentals and giving students the opportunity to specialize in specific areas of neuroscience including developmental neuroscience, pharmacology, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, neurogenetics, computational neuroscience, and electrophysiology.
Neuroscience students are also exposed to a variety of research methods in neuroscience through their coursework and through mentored research experiences with CNU faculty, ultimately designing and completing their own research projects during capstone courses. Through innovative lab experiences, all students will gain hands-on experience using advanced neuroscience technologies ranging from single-neuron recording to MRI and EEG while small class sizes guarantee that students will have the opportunity to personally use and explore these methods, not just see them in demonstration.
Outside of the classroom, students can enhance their undergraduate neuroscience experience by getting involved with local and regional neuroscience groups. At CNU, students network through the CNU Neuroscience Club and through the CNU Office for Undergraduate Research. Beyond CNU, students have the opportunity to volunteer at local hospitals and brain injury rehabilitation centers, giving them exposure to clinical neuroscience and helping them develop a holistic sense of what brain function means in the life of a person. In total, the CNU Neuroscience Program is dedicated to neuroscience education, helping prepare the neuroscientists of tomorrow through leading-edge curriculum, unparalleled student focus, and innovative, hands-on lab experiences.
